Disease prevention potential of vigorous physical activity was supported by a cohort study: Researchers at universities in China, Chile, Korea, Brazil, the UK, and Australia have found that: (a) higher percentages of vigorous physical activity are associated with lower rates of eight major chronic diseases and all-cause mortality, and (b) intensity of physical activity demonstrated higher preventive potential than volume of physical activity. Their data came from the UK Biobank, a large-scale, prospective cohort study that recruited individuals from 2006 and 2010. They analyzed data for 96,408 participants with device-measured physical activity. Their mean age was 61.9 years, 56.3% of which were women. They controlled for various sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, frailty, blood pressure, blood lipids, a measure of kidney function, use of medications, and intake of various dietary supplements. They concluded:
Their results lent support to public health campaigns and preventive clinical interventions embracing high-intensity interval training, sprint interval training, and various other analogues such as vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity and other incidental forms of vigorous activity, particularly for time-constrained populations and/or populations that are not able or keen to exercise in leisure time. While meeting recommended activity volumes remains important, prioritizing intensity—even in very smaller amounts—can provide substantial population health benefits and reduce healthcare burden across multiple chronic diseases. Importantly, this does not negate the benefits of lower-intensity physical activity. Vigorous physical activity may not be feasible for older or frail adults, for whom light-to-moderate physical activity, reductions in sedentary time, or increases in step counts can still confer meaningful health benefits
