Vaccines after age 50: Who and When?

1–2 minutes

Vaccination starts just after birth and remains an important part of preventive care throughout one’s entire life. All this is true, despite the confusion exhibited by our current governmental administration. Vaccines help babies see their first birthdays — and grandparents need to be there to help them blow out their own birthday candles. As the latter get older, immune systems slow down and respond with less strength against infections. This makes it harder to fight off illnesses, and lack of vaccinations also increase the chance that infections will have serious outcomes. After age 50, infections such as the flu, pneumonia, shingles and RSV are more likely to cause complications, and they require longer recoveries or even hospitalizations. Adults with weakened immune systems, such as from a chronic health condition or certain cancer treatments, are at an especially high risk of severe illnesses that can often be prevented with routine vaccines. Improving protection for older adults means changing how vaccines are delivered or even changing the vaccines.

Some vaccines are offered more often, in higher doses or with added ingredients that boost immune response. As health knowledge advances, vaccines are increasingly being tailored to people’s needs at different stages of life.

Keep your protection up to date: In addition to age, one’s exposure or travel plans may cause a need for additional protection. The table below highlights important vaccines to review with one’s healthcare team to make sure he/she is getting the right protection for age, health status and lifestyle.
